The SOUP OFF!Posted: January 23, 2012
There was more than one battle going on in our house yesterday.
Of course, it all stemmed from football…
You see, my husband may have been successful in turning me into a Red Sox fan (I had no prior baseball allegiance!), but he has not been (and will not be!) successful at getting me to dump my Ravens for the Patriots. We were both really excited last weekend when the Ravens and Patriots won their games because it meant that they would be able to play each other for the Superbowl playoff game. Who doesn’t enjoy a little rivalry and smack-talking?
Actually, there was very little smack-talking going on. Truth be told, I’ll root for the Pats if they’re not playing the Ravens and vice-versa.
But in this case, it was war.
We got beer to represent Baltimore and New England:
oh… you didn’t think Greg would forget Sam Adams, did you? (This beer is soooo yummy!)
We pulled out our fleece blankets:
But of course, it didn’t end there. The main event? A SOUP OFF!
New England Clam Chowder
vs. Maryland Crab Soup
Ironically enough, my absolute favorite soup in the world is Maryland Crab Soup and Greg’s is New England Clam Chowder. I guess you love what you grew up on!
We were each responsible for constructing our own soups and could NOT help the other with a single thing. Greg even shucked his own clams! He cooked his soup on the stove:
And I used the crock pot.
We invited my parents (who like the icky Steelers and Redskins!) and Will + Sara (plus their little girls) to come over to watch the game and enjoy the soups. (Sara has some good food photos on her blog!)
The girls picked the right blanket to cuddle up in. I swear, I didn’t tell them to do this. 🙂
And they LOVED saying “GO RAVENS” to Greg.
Sarah brought over some delicious roasted veggies and homemade applesauce (not pictured)- both of which I hoarded to have leftovers for lunch today!
I attempted to make Fall Latkes (a combo of golden beets, carrot and sweet potato) from Veganomicon, which ended up being on giant hashbrown.
As you can see, I was much more interested in eating the food than photographing it. 🙂
The game was great- very close and back and forth, and I would have been really happy if it ended like this:
But instead, it ended like this. With the missed field goal that will go down in history as the biggest Ravens let-down ever. Boo.
Bummer. ANOTHER Patriots/Giants Superbowl. Haven’t we seen that show already? Yawn.
As promised, I now have to don a Patriots shirt for the Superbowl and root for them. Oh well, it could be worse. It could be the Steelers…
The really important thing is that I WON THE SOUP-OFF.
Alright, we didn’t really judge, but the proof is in the pudding. Check out how much is leftover of each:
Now, Greg will tell you that it’s “not really fair” because my soup is super healthy and his is made of butter and heavy cream, and that our guests are all healthy eaters. But, we all had some of both- just a lot more of mine. 🙂
And in the end, we’re still friends.
(Note- my jersey is OLD and from the old QB from years ago. It’s time to update!!)
Do you and your significant other root for the same sports team? Do you have a rivalry with any family members?
